The Garden Committee was established in October 2018 to oversee the design and maintenance of 19 garden areas throughout the common areas of Salemtowne. The members are knowledgeable individuals with patience to create gardens and continually work to create year-round interest while perennial plants slowly grow and develop into mature gardens.

The committee includes varying number of members depending on time of year and needs of the gardens.  It is overseen by the Grounds Superintendent who provides in-depth knowledge of the soil content and water availability, and critical information in selecting plants that will thrive.  During the early establishment, the volunteers did all of the work themselves: selecting plants, visiting nurseries to find the exact plants they had chosen, planting and caring for them throughout the year as needed.  That care included watering when necessary, weeding, pruning and fertilizing.

The committee meets regularly on the third Wednesday of the month at 2:00 pm and the first Wednesday during the spring and summer as needed.

The Garden Committee assumed the oversight of the Greenhouse in 2019. The Greenhouse has been marked into 60+ areas for residents to propagate and store plants in the winter as needed.  Each area has three spaces: below the shelf, on the shelf and hanging above the shelf.  The Garden Committee uses a few spaces in this facility to propagate plants for the common gardens.  It is monitored throughout the winter by volunteers, keeping the interior at a constant temperature and pest free.

In 2019, the Garden Committee initiated a Memorial Bench program available to the Salemtowne community.
