Salemtowne Civic Association

Salemtowne is blessed with beautifully landscaped common grounds and a 9-hole executive golf course. One of the great assets of the community is the mature trees that grace the grounds.

The Tree Management Committee has oversite and provides regular management of over 600 trees on Salemtowne common grounds and golf course.

The Salemtowne trees have significant aesthetic and monetary value to the community and trees serve an important purpose to our homes, to the environment, and to the earth. Our common grounds and golf course provide one of the largest “green space” areas in West Salem today.

The Tree Committee provides policy and procedures for planning, developing, maintaining and improving the tree population.  More recently the emphasis has been on diversification and there are now 53 varieties of trees.

In 2000 each tree was inventoried, assessed and a tag attached identifying the tree number and a coded species ID.  The trees are reevaluated each year; some are identified for regular monitoring.

The Committee:

  • Responds to resident concerns regarding a specific tree(s) and makes recommendation to the SCA Board of Directors;
  • Develops procedures for evaluation, removal, replacement, alteration or planting;
  • Develops long-term removal and replacement plans;
  • Submits an annual budget for funding of tree-related projects;
  • Provides information to enhance community awareness on tree issues and concerns;
  • Works with the City of Salem on right-of-way issues.

The Salemtowne Tree Program was awarded the Oregon Urban and Community Forestry Award in the Civic Organization category for its organized approach in caring for its trees.
