Salemtowne, with its beautiful grounds, water features, and great variety of trees, attracts a large number of bird species. These species range from tiny hummingbirds and finches to owls and raptors, including occasional visits from Bald Eagles! To date, 114 species have been observed in Salemtowne.

Salemtowne Birders is a group of individuals that are interested in the bird “bounty” we have here. This group of bird fanciers enjoy sharing photos and information about birds we may have seen or heard recently, both on the Salemtowne Birders Facebook page and in person. We have monthly (somewhat spontaneously planned) bird walks April-October.  We announce the bird walks on our Facebook page, and we would  be glad to announce those here on this Salemtowne web page as well.

One of the more unexpected species we’ve found here lately is the Northern Bobwhite Quail.  As you can see in this range map, it is not native to this area.  Several alert Salemtowne residents have heard its unmistakable whistle-like call here recently, and some have even been lucky enough to photograph it.  You can read more about the Northern Bobwhite here.  Some additional enlightenment came when one long-time resident mentioned that some Northern Bobwhites had been introduced to the area by a nature-loving Salemtowne resident approximately 15 years ago.  While they haven’t been heard from here for a number of years, they recently seem to have reappeared, to our surprise.
